WORSHIP SERVICE INFORMATION FOR SUNDAY 12/05/2010

Praise the lord saints! I greet you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, who is our Salvation.  In our preaching and teaching focus, we are now moving from the fall quarter to the winter quarter. Our new quarterly theme is: “Assuring Hope” and considers ways that God Reassures us. Our texts this quarter will come from the books of Isaiah and Mark.

This week we will consider the lesson on God Who Gives us Strength from Isaiah 40. Here is the text…

TEXT: Isaiah 40:1-8, 25-26, 29-31  

1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.  2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins. 3 A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.  5 And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it together.  For the mouth of the LORD has spoken. 6 A voice says, “Cry out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?” “All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field.   7 The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them.  Surely the people are grass.   8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”

25  “To whom will you compare me?  Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.  26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these?  He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name.  Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.

29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Greetings, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the author and finisher of our faith. . What a wonderful Thanksgiving Community Worship Service. “Congratulations” and “job well done” to the many that worked so hard to make it a success. We were truly blessed.

TEXT: John 4:1-24

1 Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John— 2 although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.  3 So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee. 4 Now he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. 7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” 11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. What you have just said is quite true.” 19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.” 21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

 1 Shout for joy to God, all the earth!

   make his praise glorious.

9 The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous.

10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold ; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.

Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: 

God is good, all the time, and all the time...I want to thank all of you that were faithful in participating in our Fall Revival and helped in my 8th Pastoral Anniversary celebration. It was a fine time, I thank God for you, and I look forward to serving the Lord with you in the future.

In our preaching and teaching, we are still focusing on our quarterly theme of the “Inescapable God” This week begins a two month study of some of the Psalms, as we consider “God as our sustainer and protector.” The text for this week is Psalm 8. Here is the text… 

TEXT: Psalm 8:1-9 (NIV)

 1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!  You have set your glory above the heavens.

2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise [b] because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,

4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?

5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings [c] and crowned him with glory and honor.

6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:

7 all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field,

WHAT THE SERMON IS ABOUT: Finding our real “identity” in God. (Who is man?)

Our Fall Revival theme was “Lord do it” with our text coming from the Book of Lamentations 5:21 which says...”Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old. Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: In all things praise Him, praise him, praise Him, for He is worthy of ALL of our praise.  Homecoming was a great time in the Lord, major thanks to all that worked to make it a success--special gratitude to the Homecoming Committee for their great work.

This week for our preaching/teaching focus, we will get back on track with the text from Sunday school lessons and the story of Moses going up on the mountain to get the 10 Commandments from God, and what happened down below while he was gone. (Aren't you glad we serve a God that is patient with his people?)

Here is the text… 

TEXT: Exodus 32:1-6 (NIV)

1 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, "Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him."

2 Aaron answered them, "Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me." 

3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 

4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt."

5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, "Tomorrow there will be a festival to the LORD." 

6So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

HOME COMING SUNDAY

September 12, 2010

At a dressed down church service to begin the church year Alex Newell led the choir as it entered the sanctuary. We had many visitors including Pastor John Grayson from Selma Alabama who proclaimed us "a good old country church." And many old timers including the Homecoming Queen and King: Carri and Aaron Murkison. Our Rev. Dr William C Hill preached on how in the Lord's house, there's "no place like Home." It was a wonderful celebration of the Lord with good food and fellowship following the service. If you didn't make it last Sunday please come home next Sunday, we miss you.

Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: In all things give God the praise, He is worthy of all our praise.  Here we go, back to our regular schedule. This week I feel called to stray from SS text and to tap into Homecoming, by going to the Prodigal Son text in Luke's Gospel.  Here is the text… 

TEXT: Luke 15:11-32 

Luk 15:11 And he said, A certain man had two sons: Luk 15:12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me.  And he divided unto them his living.  Luk 15:13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.  Luk 15:14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.  Luk 15:15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.  Luk 15:16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.  Luk 15:17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!  Luk 15:18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, Luk 15:19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.  Luk 15:20 And he arose, and came to his father.  But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.  Luk 15:21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.  Luk 15:22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: Luk 15:23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: Luk 15:24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.  And they began to be merry.  Luk 15:25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing.  Luk 15:26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.  Luk 15:27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.  Luk 15:28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and entreated him.  Luk 15:29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: Luk 15:30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.  Luk 15:31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.  Luk 15:32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

God Makes a Covenant with Israel

Our Sunday School Text is Exodus 20:1-11

1And God spoke all these words:
2“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
3“You shall have no other gods before£ me.
4“You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

WORSHIP SERVICE INFORMATION FOR SUNDAY 09/05/2010 

Greetings Saints in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: In all things give God praise, he is worthy.  This Sunday marks the Labor Day weekend, the end of our summer break, and preparation for kicking off the Fall quarter. 

Our theme for this first quarter in “The Inescapable God” and we will consider in the preaching and teaching ways that God reveals himself to us, sustains us, and protects.

This Sunday we will get started with God revealing himself to a shepherd that He was going to put in service to carry out a great task, you know the story and here is the text…

TEXT: Exodus 3:1-6  (New International Version)

¹ Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

² There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.

³ So Moses thought, I will go over and see this strange sight— why the bush does not burn up.

⁴ When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, Moses! Moses! And Moses said, Here I am.

⁵ Do not come any closer, God said. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.

⁶ Then he said, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.

This week we have been saddened by the loss of our beloved brother Vernon Makkers. Please keep the family in prayer. Initial arrangements for his “Celebration of Life” service includes a wake from 4-8 PM at Solimine Funeral Home (Ocean Street location) on Wednesday, September, 8^th and the Funeral will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, September 9th (Zion Baptist Church). Repast will be here at the church following internment at Pine Grove Cemetery. Kenny Odom and Annie Jackson are taking the lead on the repast, please contact them with questions.

Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: In all things give God the praise, He is worthy.  This coming Sunday has been designated as “Mission Sunday” and is a time for us to focus on our Biblical responsibilities to show the love of God at home and abroad. Our guest preacher will be Rev. Howard McLendon ,a key leader with The American Baptist Convention of Mass.’s (TABCOM) “Ghana Mission Explosion.”  I’m confident that he has for us a Word from the Lord. Here is the text…

 

TEXT: Luke 9:12-17

Luke 9:12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.

Luke 9:13  But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.

Luke 9:14  For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.

Luke 9:15  And they did so, and made them all sit down.

Luke 9:16  Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

TEXT: Isaiah 58: 9b-14 

 
9b “If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger and malicious talk,
10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry  
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.
11 The LORD will guide you always;  
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.
12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins  
and will raise up the age-old foundations;
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,
Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.
13 “If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath  
and from doing as you please on my holy day,
if you call the Sabbath a delight
and the LORD’S holy day honorable,
and if you honor it by not going your own way

WORSHIP SERVICE INFORMATION FOR SUNDAY 08/15/2010

 Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ:  I hope that you are all enjoying the summer and getting some rest and personal time in for yourself. The summer is moving very quickly and before you know it...but praise the Lord anyhow!

On Sunday (August 15^th), we will again look at God's children on their wilderness journey, and what happened as they were meeting another of life’s challenges...here is the text:

TEXT: Exodus 15:22-27 (NIV)

²² Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water. ²³ When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah. ²⁴ So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, "What are we to drink?"

²⁵ Then Moses cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the LORD made a decree and a law for them, and there he tested them. ²⁶  He said, "If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you."

²⁷ Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.
